Content credit: Data & Society

A few major types of AI

Definition: AI is an umbrella term for a set of loosely related technologies.

Predictive AI

Making decisions about people based on predictions about future behavior or outcomes.

Example: spam filter / fraud prediction

Recommender Systems & Social Media Algorithms

Recommending content, enforcing policies.

Example: newsfeeds, Spotify/Netflix recs

Robotics

The integration of AI with mechanical systems to perform physical tasks.

Example: industrial robots, self-driving cars, drones

Generative AI

Generating new content (audio, code, images, text, video) based on description.

Example: generate code to analyze data

FRAUD SCORE—

Real-world accuracy: ~95–99%

Beware of ‘AI snake oil’

Predictions of social outcomes tend to be dubious:

  • Predicting criminal recidivism (accuracy ~65–67% range*)
  • Predicting job performance
  • Predictive policing
  • Predicting terrorist risk
  • Predicting at-risk kids

Ethical concerns are amplified by inaccuracy.

In most cases, manual scoring rules are just as accurate, far more transparent, and worth considering.

Can do things faster

  • Summarizing textbook chapters or lecture slides
  • Generating Excel/VBA formulas or fixing spreadsheet errors

Can do new things

  • Build a simple app or prototype without prior coding experience

Writing code → managing coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, etc.)

The bottleneck moves to verifying output — coding skills are still required.

IT vs. IS: information technology is mainly hardware and software; information systems also include data, people, and processes. It’s critical for managers to think about systems, rather than just technologies, when deploying technology-enabled solutions.

BCG study: the people/process part is crucial when implementing AI

Suggested effort
10%AlgorithmsData-science capabilities to develop and implement algorithms
20%TechnologyA scalable and modernized tech stack that supports business needs
70%People & ProcessesEffective processes supported by talent and change management

According to BCG: 10% of a company’s efforts should focus on algorithms, 20% on technology and data, and the remaining 70% — the lion’s share — on people and processes.

Conclusion

  • AI includes prediction and generation. Predictive AI applications are cash cows.
  • Knowledge work will change. The timeline is unclear. So immerse yourself in AI tools (e.g., try to automate things that free up an hour of your day).
  • Leverage AI/LLMs to overcome lack of experience. Mentoring, simulations & scenarios.
  • However, don’t outsource critical thinking and writing. You still need to learn the hard things.
  • Effective technology management, including people and defining processes, is even more crucial for successful implementation.
